Channeling Neville Chamberlain

September 30, 1938 Neville Chamberlain addressed the crowds at Heston Aerodrome with what is known as his "Peace in our Time" speech. Waving the Munich agreement he had signed with Hitler in which the Furor gave his word that he would not war with Britain, Chamberlain intoned:

"…This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you (Reads the agreement). We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement, as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again."

Forgive me if I may sound ignorant but isn't it true that the "executive order" which the President promised to sign will not be able to stand against the actual piece of legislation that was passed on Sunday? Did Rep. Stupak accept a promise that will not be able to be upheld?

You're correct AL. "This was a question the Bush administration examined quite extensively on several occasions, and the lawyers involved always agreed that the legal precedents from the time between the Roe decision and passage of the Hyde amendment, as well as some after the Hyde amendment, are extremely clear in stating that federal funds cannot be denied to the provision of abortion except by explicit legislative prohibition." This is what made the Hyde amendment necessary. Executive order is a ruse. There is no mechanism for enforcing the order, and it can be rescinded at any time by this president or a successor.

Wow! Thanks for the insight. Not sure where to go from here. What should the next step be?

identify congressional and senatorial races around the country that will affect legislative change and send them your money and pledge your time. We will not be able to repeal this without both houses of congress. This will take years since we can't flip the senate this year. There is a danger that once enough people are on the government dole, we won't have the clout to flip the senate and presidency in 2012 either. Could be a rocky road my friend.
